On June 20th , 2018 , the Women of Chapman , a philanthropic support group for Chapman University , granted the Women of Chapman Student Filmmaker Endowment Award to five director / producers during the annual membership luncheon at the Balboa Bay Resort .
The Women of Chapman Endowed Student Filmmaker Award is a need- and merit-based award available to undergraduate students to be used toward their senior thesis film project . It is a requirement of graduation to produce a short film , which is an added expense to the students .
Finalists are asked to deliver a short presentation to a panel from The Women of Chapman representatives and the Dodge College Film and Media Arts faculty and staff .
Bob Bassett , dean of the film school , stated , “ On behalf of our students , I thank you for your ongoing support toward Dodge College of Film and Media Arts . Dodge College is grateful for the ongoing support from the Women of Chapman and we appreciate our shared pride in furthering storytelling in the future generation of filmmakers .”
The purpose of this award is to provide valuable resources needed for productions with a unique story concept and / or distinctive opportunity that are in transit to the development of the story ; examples might include shooting at a distant location ( s ), need of a special location , use of special equipment , or use of a student coordinator . The award is project-based and the award recipients are chosen based upon the merits of the script , the uniqueness of the concept / opportunity and its value to the storytelling , and the intended use of the grant and the accomplishments of the individual team members . All undergraduate students in their junior year and enrolled full-time at Dodge College are eligible to apply .
Since its inception in 2010 , the award recipients have received $ 245,000 .
2018 was our seventh year granting students this coveted award — a total of $ 53,000 awarded to the students .
