Classics and Dramatics
Corey Christiansen has been playing guitar since age 5. After getting his master’s in music from the
University of South Florida, he took up a career with Mel Bay as an author and clinician—a gig that
had him performing and molding his personal guitar style for the better part of this century. With
his feet planted firmly in the jazz tradition, Christiansen stakes out new territory on his latest album,
Factory Girl. In a recent interview, he discussed his musical approach on revitalizing American classics
like “Shenandoah” and “John Hardy.”
We also caught up with the Generation Axe shred supergroup assembled by Steve Vai. Head
online to see the 20-something Marshall amps Yngwie Malmsteen brings from coast to coast, as well
as all the gear played by Vai, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettencourt, and Tosin Abasi.

New Footage, Plus Podcasts!
Our latest video lesson in the “What Bohlinger Plays” series is a fun one. Host John
Bohlinger breaks out a cigar box guitar for his tutorial on “Fretting Behind the Bar.”
In standard tuning, he shows us some Sonny Landreth-style slide techniques to try at
home. (Fun fact: You can see Bohlinger in action onstage, playing pedal steel in country
star Lee Brice’s band.)
Conversations in the Key of Life is our new podcast that covers the musical journeys
of our faithful readers. Each episode finds PG’s Shawn Hammond talking to everyday
players about their hilarious, unbelievable, and sometimes tear-jerking experiences. Our
latest episode explores gigs from hell—performances gone horribly awry. We also recently
launched a Rig Rundowns Podcast, which takes you backstage to hear about the live
gear used by your guitar and bass heroes. Subscribe now on iTunes and pick up new
tricks for how to set up your rig.
