who merely used the word ‘man’ to
stand for humankind. In their day
this was perfectly proper, and was
understood to denote both males
and females. These two writers do
not deserve to be ‘sic-ed’.
But this raises the issue of inclusive
language and political correctness
in our times. Are we going astray in
our use of language by insisting that
only words that refer directly to both
sexes are acceptable?

feature of lying flat when opened.
I did not even glance inside – it
was the trusty NIV, after all. What
a shock, though, to start reading
it at home and to find some verses
changed almost beyond recognition,
