CHANGING THE GAME( FORMAT) FOR U5 AND U6

1. WHAT RESEARCH SHOWS
Previous research by U. S. Soccer showed that the majority of players drop out between ages 6-8 years old; the Player Development Initiatives launched by U. S. Soccer in 2017 recommended that U6-U8 play up to 4v4. No recommendations were provided for U5. We need to focus on our foundation to grow our future!
In 2022, the U. S. Soccer Technical Development Department led a research project supported by all member associations( AYSO, S. A. Y. Soccer, US Club Soccer, USL, U. S. S. S. A., and USYS) to investigate the BEST environments for our youngest players.
The project included domestic and international benchmarking, measurement events, and pilot testing across a full season.
The results were clear:- 2v2 and 3v3 formats increase player involvement and enjoyment- Four goals + new ball restarts = higher involvement and motivation
Key Idea: We need to design environments that give players more of what they need: scoring chances, decisions, and joy.
2. WHY FOUR GOALS?
Each team attacks 2 goals, defends 2 goals spread wide( minimum ~ 12 yards apart)
Creates width naturally( no coaching needed)
Why it matters:- More scoring chances- Less congestion, fewer collisions More decision-making( which goal? when?)
Key Idea: Let the environment teach spacing and decision-making.
