Color
Discolored water in Arlington creeks after heavy rains is common . This condition , known as turbidity , is a temporary occurrence . However , water colored bright , vibrant colors : green , blue , red , purple , orange , yellow , etc . is most likely not natural and should be reported to your local authority . Additionally , water that looks white , black , or gray may also be a sign of an unhealthy creek .
Residents should never enter creeks that are discolored or allow pets or children to play in such waters .
Odor Odors emanating from creeks may also indicate a problem . For example : Rotten eggs — raw sewage , decomposing organic matter , lack of oxygen Chlorine — Swimming pool , wastewater or industrial discharges Sharp / Pungent — Chemicals or pesticides Musty — Presence of raw or partially treated sewage Gasoline / Petroleum — Illegal dumping of wastes , or industrial discharge Sweet / Fruity — Commercial wash water
