al migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelle join the wildebeest’s trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephants and giraffes, and thousands upon thousands of elands, topis, kongonis, impalas and Grant’s gazelles. A visit between the months of June to October enables a visitor to see predators in action or be- tween Decembers and Julys to track the wildebeest migration are some of the many attractions of the Serengeti. Hot air balloon safaris, walking safari, picnics, game drives, and bush lunch/dinner can be ar- ranged with hotels/tour operators.  Maasai rock paintings and musical rocks all conspire to make sure that a visit to the Serengeti would have no dull moments whatsoever. Mountain Kilimanjaro: Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highlight of most visitors’ experiences in Tanzania. Few mountains can claim the grandeur, the breathtaking views of Amboseli National Park in Kenya, the Rift Valley, and the Masaai Steppe, that belongs to Kilimanjaro. Hiking on the ‘rooftop of Africa’ — the high- est point on the continent at 5896 metres — is the adventure of a lifetime, especially because, if paced well, everyone from seasoned trekkers to first-time enthusiasts can scale the snowy peak. Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most accessible high summits, a beacon for visitors from around the world. Most climbers reach the crater rim with little more than a walking stick, proper clothing and determination. And those who reach Uhuru Point, the actual summit, or Gillman’s Point on the lip of the crater, will have earned their climbing certificates, and their memories. The Kilimanjaro has the clearest and warmest weather conditions between December and Febru- ary, but even if climbing heights isn’t your thing, trout fishing in the beautiful Chala crater lake on the mountain’s south-eastern slopes is another attraction of Africa’s Rooftop. 70 | PRTIMES AFRICA MARCH 2016
