Monica Musonda On a quest to take advantages of the abundant opportunities in africa “As Africans, we need to take advantage of the opportunities [in Africa], create sustainable development and wealth”. F rom law to, corporate finance to entrepreneurship, Zambian born industrialist, Monica Katebe Musonda's career trajectory has taken her to the heights of a number of industries in a variety of market situations giving her experiences – even at a young age –many spend their entire working lives not even dreaming of. Born in Zambia Monica obtained a Bachelors degree in Law from University of Zambia and an LLM from the University of London. She then proceeded to work in corporate law and then as an in-house counsel at the International Finance Corporation, before joining the Dangote Group as Director of Legal and Corporate services, where she led the establishment of the Dangote Cement operation in Zambia. With her experiences in a high flying career she returned home to establish Java Foods – the manufacturers of the popular eeZee brand of instant noodles – with the intention of taking advantage of surplus wheat flour production. She counts her time in Nigeria – where her eyes were opened to the entrepreneurial spirit, with many young people working for themselves – as being key in her decision of taking the leap of faith required to work for herself. 24 VOL 1. JULY 2015 An unapologetic advocate for Africans investing in Africa, Monica's company aims to make affordable, nutritious and locally sourced food products for the East and South African markets. Musonda is a strong believer that Africa is the next frontier of global investing and economic growth, hence she is, putting her money where her mouth is, by concentrating her investments on the continent and actively encourages Africans to “take advantage of the opportunities, create sustainable development and wealth”. Currently, CEO, Java Foods, her career successes hav brought her several opportunities to contribute her knowledge with several directorship positions in several organizations including Bank of Zambia, African Life Assurance (subsidiary of Sanlam) and Dangote Industries Zambia. She also serves as the Chairperson, Kwacha Pension Trust Fund (Zambia's largest single employer pension fund), and is a member of the Advisory Board, Microsoft4Afrika. She has received several honours, both at home and abroad, such as Young Global Leader of World Economic Forum, Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Fellowship and being named as one of Forbes 20 Young Power Women in Africa 2013. 1ST EDITION PR TIMES AFRICA
