Knock on
Wood
by Ashley Murrell
Jeffro Uitto is an exemplary artist of finding natural material to create beautiful works of
art. Located in Tokeland, Washington, Uitto has
established his own business; Knock on Wood
(www.jeffrouitto.com), carving one of a kind
pieces inspired by the Pacific Northwest out of
driftwood located around Washington State.
His portfolio of work spans across display
pieces, such as his more than life size Dungeness
crab, to an installation eagle sculpture or functional furniture with an added natural character.
Uitto also welcomes unique requests, eager to
create from within and spread the beauty of this
natural resource. Pieces range from being carved
from one gigantic piece of driftwood, to being
composed of smaller hand carved sections of
wood that are sealed together to create a large,
magnificent shape, such as his big project Horse
and Archway installations in Westport and Long
Beach, Washington.
A green artist for the ages, Uitto’s work is
inspiring, creative and sustainable.
Uitto has been creating and carving with
wood since high school. Now based along the
oceanfront, Uitto doesn’t have to go too far to
gather his materials. There are plenty of materials available along his homeland shores including
Smith Creek and Willapa Hills. Once the driftwood has been gathered, none of it is discarded
but rather sectioned and directed to a proper channel, insuring that every part of the wood is used.
Uitto’s studio is also a workplace of beauty—all his tools were handcrafted himself. However, he isn’t always creating just in Washington,
he has also been commissioned to do installations
in Alaska and Hawaii!
Interested parties are welcome to his studio in Tokeland. The artist enjoys showing how
his creations come to life. Uitto is proof that art
can be renewed through almost any medium. His
finished pieces are nothing short of amazing.
