Henri P. Gaboriau

Even as a medical student in France, Henri Gaboriau was sure he belonged in the United States. He felt the highly socialized French medical system did not allow for enough attention to the individual patient. But even more, “the entrepreneurial spirit was dying in France” in the 1980s, he said. America’s optimism and opportunities led him to enroll in Tulane’s medical school, having already earned an MD in France. When he finished his residency in New Orleans, Dr. Gaboriau came to the University of Washington. He stayed because it seemed like home. “I’m from the west part of France,” he said. “Brittany, which is like Ireland – green, overcast, gray and rainy. So I feel at home here.”

He met his wife Dany, a Montrealite, at a medical conference in Mexico. Six months ago they had their first son, Henri Gaboriau VI . “It puts things in perspective,” Dr. Gaboriau said. “Suddenly, he said, “you realize that work is one thing, but there is more than just work.”

An avid wine connoisseur (another reason to love the Pacific Northwest), he arranges wine tours for his friends and is even becoming a sommelier. Henri Gaboriau is a master diver as well. But, he says, as a dry-suit diver, he really does not enjoy diving in the frigid waters of the Puget Sound. --MF
