THE BROADWAY BEAT
WALKING IN A BROADWAY WONDERLAND
by Oliver Roth
The start of winter means the start of the joyful holiday spirit. There are also a few shows which hope to spread joy when they open on Broadway this winter. Here are your winter 2017 must-sees:
Jitney - Manhattan Theatre Club brings Pulitzer and Tony winner August Wilson’s (Fences, The Piano Lesson) Jitney to the Broadway stage this winter. Jitney is the only work from Wilson’s The American Century Cycle that has yet to be seen on Broadway.
Significant Other - Significant Other marks playwright Joshua Harmon’s (Bad Jews) Broadway debut. The play, about a group of college friends searching for their significant others, received great reviews last year during a production at the Roundabout Theatre Company.
Come From Away - Come From Away takes place in Gander, Newfoundland in the days following September 11th, 2001, when 38 planes were rerouted to the local airport in response to the terror attacks. The small town nearly doubled in population overnight, and Come From Away explores the relationships formed in that time.
Sunset Boulevard - Glen Close (Fatal Attraction, Damages) reprises her Tony Award winning role as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. The production played a sold-out run in London’s West End last year. It features a 40-piece orchestra and is directed by Lonny Price (Merrily We Roll Along, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill).
Bring a little extra joy to your winter by picking up a ticket to one of these shows. Be sure to cross these off the list early, because there are already 15 shows announced to open on Broadway in Spring 2017. I’ll be introducing you to some of the Spring highlights in the coming months.
