LETTER from the EDITOR

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

In this issue, our ground reporters have the world by the tail and show us the many ways we celebrate our dearest friends. Our animals are more important to us than ever. They are our companions, friends, confidantes, protectors and muses. In a hectic and increasingly stress-filled world, our animals greet us at the door night after night, with no promise other than to love us unconditionally for who we really are.

I have never trusted any human who did not care much for animals. Once I had a business colleague from out-of-town visiting with me. She professed a distinct dislike for cats, especially my cat, whose name is “Boy J. Kitty.” Sensing the obvious, Boy J. Kitty made a big point of seeking the bedroom where she slept. He sprawled out in a glorious full extension of his long body, gracing the length of her king-size pillow. When she saw him there, she screamed. But I did not rescue her, nor did she dare harm him. I’m not afraid to admit it. I care for Boy J. Kitty more than I care for most people. He is that special to me, and business…well, it’s just business.

We all have our special stories to share about animals who became part of our lives. In this issue of The Connector, we look at a kaleidoscope of animals. Manny Frishberg interviewed Ingrid Newkirk, who is the founder and President of PETA. Ms Newkirk shares some ways we can demand changes to protect animals by the choices we make shopping during the holidays. We also feature two Veterinarians. Dr. Morris Samson from Toronto has become known for the many contributions he has made to charities benefiting people and animals all over the world. Former Veterinarian David R. Gross is spending his retirement years writing books about the dogs he has known in his life.

You have not fully experienced life until you have deeply loved an animal. Season’s Greetings!

- Patricia Vaccarino
