Prior to becoming an author of tales finely woven to touch you in ways you never knew possible, David R. Gross was a Veterinarian for ten years. Later he returned to school and earned his PhD in cardiovascular physiology. He then taught and did research in that field for more than three decades.
David had always been interested in medicine and had a special place in his heart reserved for animals. As a child growing up in Phoenix Arizona, the librarian at David’s elementary school set aside every new book about animals for him to read.
Now animals play a special role in David’s books. After David retired from academia, he and his wife Rosalie had looked forward to traveling writing and focusing on social action causes. Instead, after 52 years of marriage, Rosalie died.
Travels with Charlize: In Search of Living Alone, is a powerful story of hope. David is grieving for his beloved wife, and Charlize is a German shepherd rescue dog with her own set of problems. The two make a fine pair. David bought a travel trailer, closed his house and the two troubled souls embarked on their journey. They took a year visiting parks and vistas, rain forests and deserts, family and old friends, and with help from each other discovered how to forge a new life.
Whether you’ve suffered with your own loss of a loved one matters little. This is a joyful story that reminds us how important it is to have a companion to stand by us in good times and in bad. Even if that companion happens to be a dog, it is a reminder of just how important animals are in the whole emotional fabric of our lives.
