Millie came to the South Bronx at the tender age of 11 years old from Puerto Rico and spoke only Spanish at that time. She felt as if she was thrown into the lion’s den, as she was put in all English classes in school. She understood English but could not speak it.

Millie’s favorite childhood memory of living in The Bronx is going to the pool in the summer with the kids from school as well as with the neighbors. She also enjoyed going to Orchard Beach with her family on Sunday which she still does.

Millie’s favorite thing about The Bronx is the history and culture which is so diverse with all kinds of people which she absolutely loves. She enjoys learning from other people as well as from other cultures.

Her favorite places in The Bronx are Orchard Beach, because it reminds her of Puerto Rico due to the amazing atmosphere and the people, and the Botanical Gardens, where the flowers remind her of her childhood in Puerto Rico. Millie also likes 3rd Avenue followed by 149th Street, which was the first avenue and street that she knew of. Millie also enjoys doing her shopping at the market on 116th street.

Her favorite restaurants in The Bronx are Tony’s Pier and Se in City Island where everyone goes for there for the great food and drinks.

Millie describes The Bronx as being a Multicultural Mini World all on its own and definitely a melting pot. Millie invites everyone who has never been to The Bronx to come and taste the food! And don’t forget that Hip Hop was born in The Bronx!
