Dear Clients, Colleagues and Friends: Welcome to PR for People® The Connector! In this issue, we are celebrating authors, books and the publishing industry. The rise of digital publishing along with lower costs for traditional publishing has sparked a tremendous increase in the number of books now being published.
How many new books are on the market? A 2012 report by Bowker, the company that manages and sells ISBN (book identifier codes), says that since 2006 the number of self-published books, both in print and ebooks, is up by 287%. This number only reflects titles with ISBNs and does not include Kindle exclusives and other sources that don’t use ISBNs.
Whatever the actual numbers, we have observed that there is a tremendous glut of books in the marketplace and many authors and publishers are trying to promote themselves. Having a solid PR strategy in place is the only way authors and publishers stand a chance of building genuine communities for their books, and we’re here to help them.
In our magazine, we thought it would be fun not to take books too seriously. Instead of the “same old” book promotion, we thought we would take a radical departure and feature those amazing pets in our lives, who sit quietly by our sides while we write our books. We have plenty of time to seriously explore best practices for book promotion during our 3rd Annual Seattle Book Summit on August 1st. Please join us for what promises to be an amazing summit and register online at Eventbrite. –Patricia Vaccarino
