PR for People Monthly April 2015 | Page 7

Dear Friends, Clients and Colleagues:

My earliest memory of race was formed in a kindergarten classroom in Yonkers. My first teacher, Mrs. Kerry, was African-American. Next to my parents, my grandparents and God, Mrs. Kerry was the most important person in my life. In my four-year-old brain, I didn’t understand why Mrs. Kerry had to always sit in the back of the bus. I thought if I became a teacher I could sit there, too. But then one day I noticed all the white people sat up front and only black people sat in the back.

Today I’m still wrestling with inequality. I don’t understand how we have an African-American President in the White House and young black men are getting slain in the streets. In this issue, we take a peek at the many ways we discriminate against one another. Race is only one way. Anything that unfairly shuts others out and lets some people in is discrimination. If you believe in America, the existence of discrimination against even one person means we are not a free country. At PR for People®, we think civil rights covers all people. More than anything, we believe in people, and we are here to share our news with the world.
