Change of season and eating for health

Lauren Todd , nutritionist at UCOOK .
Summertime means more time outside . More time with family and friends . And more time to share delicious food and recipes . While feeling festive , and getting into that summer spirit , we can often forget to nourish our bodies as they require . Here are seven fun tips to support your body inside and out :
1 . Snack on seasonal fruits and veggies . You will get your nutrients ; you will stay hydrated and they are delicious . Who does not love eating watermelon or mangos on the beach or in the pool ?
2 . Stay hydrated . Start with occasionally switching your favourite soda or alcoholic beverage for a lighter fresh fruit and veggie juice . Or try infused seltzers or sparkling water . Keep a bottle of water close by during the warm months and sip on it throughout the day .
3 . Wear sunblock and sun protection . Find yourself a stylish , comfy hat and make it part of your fashion – your skin will thank you . Wear a light but high SPF sunscreen every day , to protect sensitive areas on your face and neck , especially if you are in direct sun .
4 . Eat slowly and mindfully . Try to stick to lighter or higher fibre meals . Take note of how full you feel , as you may find that you are not as hungry in hotter weather as your stomach digests food much slower . High-fibre meals also help you feel fuller quicker and keep you sustained for longer , which in turn helps avoid overeating and unnecessary snacking later on .
5 . Eat cooling foods , such as cucumbers , oranges , spinach , strawberries and watermelon . The higher
water content in these foods hydrate the body more , and thus are able to help keep you cool on a hot day .
6 . Stay active . Use the warm lovely weather to get outside and get some fresh air . The effect that spending time in nature has on our bodies and mind is tremendous . Studies have proven that being outdoors , moving our bodies and breathing in the fresh air , can improve heart rate and blood pressure .
7 . Practice gratitude . Taking a few moments each day to be aware of the positives in your life and how grateful you are to be where you are . Practicing gratitude can have profound effects on our mental health .
