Power VS Responsibility Feb. 2014 | Page 7

Comparison

These three characters all have something in common. They all had an event happen where they gained a lot of power, and they had to take a lot of responsibility. Macbeth is similar to Light in the way that they both decided to kill with all of their power, whereas Peter wanted to stop such actions with his power. Both Macbeth and Light lose a sight in what is good, and it ultimately hurts them in the end.

"She would have died hereafter. There would have been a time for such a word" (Shakespeare 177).

This is Macbeth's reaction to Lady Macbeth's death. Clearly he is lacking in emotion at this point, due to the amount of power he had. Something similar happens to Light, he gets so absorbed in his own power that he can't see what is right anymore.

They all gain different types of power, but they all showed increases in responsibility. Macbeth gains political power, Peter gains physical power, and godlike power (the ability to choose who lives and who dies). This is interesting because it shows that no matter what kind of power you gain, you will always gain more responsibility. Despite having many differences, they all share the same idea that is summed up perfectly by Uncle Ben: "with great power comes great responsibility."
