Prom looks a lot different today than it did when our parents and grandparents were going to the big dance. Walk with us down memory lane as we look at Prom: Then & Now. 1960s 1970s 1980s 1990s 2014 1965: Kathy Julian Cook and her date attend the Bessemer High School Prom, where they likely danced to the Beatles, The Four Seasons and the Supremes. 1978: The Disco Era was in full-swing. Greg Mashburn and his date, Kathy Woods, did “The Hustle” and celebrated Senior year with all things Bee Gees. 1987: High School sweethearts Kelly and Jimmy Aulner (still married!) likely danced to “Careless Whisper” by Wham!, a #1 hit the year of their prom. 1990: M.C. Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” inspired teens everywhere to do “The Running Man.” Cindy (Copeland) Morehouse’s date probably made sure she got home on time after this warm welcome from her uncles. Circa 1992. Last year, teens were rocking out to Lorde’s “Royals” and Pharrell Williams’ “Happy.” Kenzie Gourlay and Matt Johnson are so “happy” to be headed to prom. PROM-POSALS Gone are the days when you could simply ask someone to prom. “Prom-posals” are the new way to win over your date. From sweet and simple to over-the-top outrageous, teens are finding fun and creative ways to say, “Wanna go to prom with me?” 1. I Like You a Latte: Graham Briggs prom-poses to his date, Anna Kate Chambliss, with a simple message in a latte froth. 2. Prom-ise: Jacob Lewis of Calera, Alabama, surprised his girlfriend Madison Brooks with twinkling lights and a sign declaring his wish for her to be his prom date. 1 www.potentialmagazine.com 2 31
