Undergraduate Programme Handbook Aug 2013 PLAGIARISM AND ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Any action on your part which involves plagiarism (defined as the unacknowledged use of another’s work as if it were one’s own) or other form of academic dishonesty, in work which may be assessed as part of the requirements for an academic award, will be regarded as a serious offence. Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty are treated with the utmost seriousness within the University and will be penalised accordingly. The marks and results of any student who is found guilty of such an offence will be adjusted, potentially to zero with whatever consequences would normally follow from such performance. Extreme cases of proven academic dishonesty can be penalised by exclusion from the University and the refusal to award a diploma/degree. The University's Regulations governing plagiarism and academic dishonesty are available from the University web site here . Where a case of dishonesty or plagiarism is suspected, the Board of Examiners will not come to a decision on the mark until the facts have been reasonably established. Where a case of cheating or plagiarism has been reasonably established, the Board of Examiners will judge the seriousness of the academic misdemeanour and exercise its discretion over the mark pertaining to the piece of work as appropriate to the case. On such occasions, the Board of Examiners will proceed in accordance with the University’s Code of Practice and Regulation governing Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty as contained in the current edition of the University Calendar and any subsequent amendments to the Calendar. On those occasions where the judgement (referred to above) results in the student’s discontinuation from the programme, a report will be submitted to the Academic Secretary of the University. Such action will be undertaken in accordance with the University’s Code of Practice and Regulation on Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty as contained in the current edition of the University Calendar and any subsequent amendments to the Calendar.
