Postgraduate doctoral loans
Non-means-tested loan from Student Finance England of up to £ 30,301( 2025 / 26 starters) in total for the whole course, towards tuition fees, living costs and other course costs. Eligibility criteria apply.
University of Portsmouth PhD scholarships and bursaries
A number of fully funded three-year scholarships will be available for 2025 entry across a range of subject areas.
ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership( SCDTP)
Fee and maintenance grant funding for social science research in area studies, business and management, criminology and psychology subjects. with support from the South East Physics Network( SEPNet).
TREES Doctoral Landscape Award( DLA)
Supported by NERC, with a collaboration of 10 hosting partners and over 70 industry, academic, and NGO partners, TREES is an innovative, inclusive, and interdisciplinary PhD training programme dedicated to preparing the next generation of environmental scientists.

If you have a University of Portsmouth qualification, you may be eligible for up to 20 per cent off your tuition fees.

Bench fees
Some PhD projects may require additional fees – known as bench fees – for equipment and other consumables, and these will be added to your standard tuition fee. Speak to the supervisory team during your interview about any additional fees you may have to pay. Please note, bench fees are not eligible for discounts and are non-refundable.
