FLEXIBLE study options.

We aim to remove the barriers that stand in the way of you achieving your ambitions. So you can study your way, with the support of those who are truly invested in your success.
Whether you’ re a recent graduate or have already started your career, our research degrees give you the flexibility to combine your research studies with your other commitments. We offer part-time and distance learning options, work-based research degrees, split-site PhDs and other opportunities for flexible delivery.
Part time
Choosing a part-time programme allows you to study at your own pace. It also helps spread the cost of tuition fees over an extended period.
‘ The University of Portsmouth is a very supportive environment for people from all backgrounds, not just the more traditional academic route or for those doing their PhD full time. The evening support sessions have really helped me feel part of the research culture despite mostly working remotely.’
Sarah Groszewski PhD in Law
Complete your research journey on your terms.
Distance learning
Depending on your research discipline, choose to study at a distance at a time and place that fits with your other commitments.
No matter where you are in the world, you’ ll benefit from the University of Portsmouth’ s expertise, dedicated support and wealth of learning resources.
Flexible study
Our PhD, MPhil and MD programmes start in October, February and April, and many can be studied part time or via distance learning.
