ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Monash University’ s English language requirements can be met in one of the following ways.
COMPLETED PRIOR STUDIES IN ENGLISH
You have studied at an institution where English is the language of instruction, communication and assessment for all aspect of study for the whole of the educational institution by completing the following qualifications:
• an Australian bachelor’ s degree( or equivalent), which must be completed and taken within five years prior to the Monash course commencement date
• an Australian master’ s degree( or equivalent), which must be completed and taken within five years prior to the Monash course commencement date.
Documentary evidence in the form of an official letter is required from the institution at which the study was undertaken. This document must be written and signed by the institution’ s registrar( or other authorised person) of the education institution to the satisfaction of the Academic Board.
MONASH ENGLISH
Monash University Malaysia offers Monash English( ME) for students who do not meet the English entry requirements. Some Monash University courses do not accept ME.

Monash University reserves the right to ask you to undertake an approved English proficiency test to meet the English course requirements.
The published scores are based on Monash University’ s English requirements and subject to change.
In addition to the University’ s English requirements, the Malaysian Government has set English requirements for each course. When you apply, you will be advised if you have met those requirements.
ME is not applicable for the Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Commerce, Master of Clinical Psychology, and Master of Professional Counselling. The 10-week ME is not applicable for a pathway to the Master of Biotechnology.
ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TESTS The following English proficiency tests are accepted by Monash University:
• IELTS( Academic)/ IELTS One Skill Retake( Academic)/ IELTS Online overall band score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0. For more information, visit � www. ielts. org
• TOEFL iBT / TOEFL iBT Paper Edition 1 total score of 79 with 12 in Listening, 13 in Reading, 21 in Writing and 18 in Speaking. For more information, visit � www. ets. org
• Pearson Test of English( Academic) 1 overall score of 58 with no Communicative Skills lower than 50. For more information, visit � www. pearsonpte. com
• C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency 1 overall score of 176 with no skill score lower than 169. For more information visit, � www. cambridgeenglish. org
Higher scores are required for graduate research courses under the School of Arts and Social Sciences and the School of Business:
• IELTS( Academic)/ IELTS One Skill Retake( Academic)/ IELTS Online overall band score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0
• TOEFL iBT / TOEFL iBT Paper Edition 1 total score of 94 with 20 in Listening, 19 in Reading, 24 in Writing and 20 in Speaking
• Pearson Test of English( Academic) 1 overall score of 65 with no Communicative Skills lower than 58
• C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency 1 overall score of 185 with 185 in Writing and no skill score lower than 169.

Higher scores are required for the Master of Biotechnology:
• Monash English( 20-week) only – higher requirements apply
• IELTS( Academic)/ IELTS One Skill Retake( Academic)/ IELTS Online overall band score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.5 in Reading and Listening and a minimum of 6.0 in Writing and Speaking
• TOEFL iBT / TOEFL iBT Paper Edition 1 total score of 79 with minimum scores of 21 in Writing, 20 in Listening, 19 in Reading and 18 in Speaking
• Pearson Test of English( Academic) 1 overall score of 58 or above with Listening and Reading score not lower than 58 and Writing and Speaking score not lower than 50
• C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency 1 overall score of 176 with Listening and Reading score not lower than 176 and Writing and Speaking score not lower than 169.
In order for the English proficiency tests to be considered they must be taken within 24 months prior to the course commencement date.
The above scores reflect only Monash University’ s minimum English requirement and may differ with the English requirements set by the Malaysian Government for each course. 2

• PTE Academic: overall score of 42, with no score lower than 36.
For Master of Biotechnology as destination degree:
• C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency: overall score of 169 with no score lower than 169; or
• IELTS( Academic)/ IELTS One Skill Retake( Academic)/ IELTS Online: overall score of 6.0 with no score lower than 6.0; or
• TOEFL iBT / TOEFL iBT Paper Edition: overall score of 60, with a minimum score of 21 in writing, score of 18 in speaking, score of 13 in reading and score of 12 in listening; or
• PTE Academic: overall score of 50, with no score lower than 50.
Any other qualifications or requirements recognised by Monash University and the Malaysian government.

• TOEFL iBT / TOEFL iBT Paper Edition: overall score of 60, with a minimum score of 18 in writing, score of 16 in speaking, score of 8 in reading and score of 7 in listening; or
• PTE Academic: overall score of 50 with no score lower than 42.
The 10-week program is not applicable as a pathway to the Master of Biotechnology. Any other qualifications or requirements recognised by Monash University and the Malaysian Government.
1 Monash University does not accept TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition, Pearson Test of English( Academic) Online and Cambridge Linguaskill General as satisfying the English entry requirement for any Monash course.
2 Should the English requirement of Monash University be lower than the government requirement, the higher requirement applies. The Malaysian Government generally sets the English requirement for Postgraduate courses at IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL iBT 60 / PTE Academic 59 / C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 169, though it may vary among courses. Based on this scenario, a student scoring 58 in PTE Academic will still need to retake another English proficiency test to fulfill the Malaysian government requirement, despite meeting the University’ s minimum requirement. You may check with the Admissions Office on the government requirement of your applied course to prepare for your English test.
