HOW TO APPLY FOR A RESEARCH DEGREE
1 CHECK YOUR ELIGIBILITY
Check that you have the necessary academic qualifications and English language profiency, and are at least 17 years of age at the time of enrolment. Please contact the Monash University Malaysia Graduate Research Office( MUMGRO) at mum. gro @ monash. edu for additional faculty-based requirements.
4 RECEIVE AN INVITATION TO APPLY
If your EOI is successful, you’ ll receive an invitation to apply for a research degree. MUMGRO receives a high volume of enquiries from potential students and it may take up to four weeks to process your EOI.
5 PREPARE YOUR DOCUMENTATION
When completing your application, you’ ll be asked to upload copies of documents which include at least:
• academic curriculum vitae
• academic transcripts and certificates
• proof of citizenship
• proof of meeting the University’ s English language proficiency requirement
• referee reports
• research proposal.

Graduate research degrees involve the independent investigation of a research problem formulated in consultation with a minimum of two supervisors.

3 SUBMIT YOUR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
Once you have identified and contacted supervisors in the research area of your choice, submit the Expression of Interest( EOI) form and the supporting documents as specified. If you wish to be considered for a competitive, merit-based scholarship, please indicate this on the form.

6 LODGE A FORMAL APPLICATION
Once you receive an invitation to apply from MUMGRO, you’ re ready to submit your application. Review our Application Submission Guide( � monash. edu. my / app-guide) for details on the required supporting documents and our Graduate Research Admission and Scholarship Application portal.

7 YOUR APPLICATION IS ASSESSED
Applications can take between six to eight weeks to process. Once the assessment process is complete you will be formally notified of the outcome.
8 ACCEPT YOUR OFFER
If you receive an offer of admission and / or an offer of scholarship support, you are required to formally accept or decline the offer( s).
ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Monash University’ s English language requirements can be met in one of the following ways.
COMPLETED PRIOR STUDIES IN ENGLISH You have studied at an institution where English is the language of instruction, communication and assessment for all aspect of study for the whole of the educational institution by completing the following qualifications:
• an Australian bachelor’ s degree( or equivalent), which must be completed and taken within five years prior to the Monash course commencement date
• an Australian master’ s degree( or equivalent), which must be completed and taken within five years prior to the Monash course commencement date.
Documentary evidence in the form of an official letter is required from the institution at which the study was undertaken. This document must be written and signed by the institution’ s registrar( or other authorised person) of the education institution to the satisfaction of the Academic Board.
ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TESTS The following English proficiency tests are accepted by Monash University:
• IELTS( Academic)/ IELTS One Skill Retake( Academic)/ IELTS Online overall band score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0. For more information, visit � www. ielts. org
• TOEFL iBT / TOEFL iBT Paper Edition 1 total score of 79 with 12 in Listening, 13 in Reading, 21 in Writing and 18 in Speaking. For more information, visit

• Pearson Test of English( Academic) 1 overall score of 58 with no Communicative Skills

Higher scores are required for the Master of Biotechnology:
• Monash English( 20-week) only – higher requirements apply( please see page 33)
• IELTS( Academic)/ IELTS One Skill Retake( Academic)/ IELTS Online overall band score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.5 in Reading and Listening and a minimum of 6.0 in Writing and Speaking
• TOEFL iBT / TOEFL iBT Paper Edition 1 total score of 79 with minimum scores of 21 in Writing, 20 in Listening, 19 in Reading and 18 in Speaking
• Pearson Test of English( Academic) 1 overall score of 58 or above with Listening and Reading score not lower than 58 and Writing and Speaking score not lower than 50
• C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency 1 overall score of 176 with Listening and Reading score not lower than 176 and Writing and Speaking score not lower than 169.
In order for the English proficiency tests to be considered they must be taken within 24 months prior to the course commencement date.
The above scores reflect only Monash University’ s minimum English requirement and may differ with the English requirements set by the Malaysian Government for each course. Should the English requirement of Monash University be lower than the government requirement, the higher requirement applies. The Malaysian Government generally sets the English requirement for Postgraduate courses at IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL iBT 60 / PTE Academic 59 / C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 169, though it may vary among courses. Based on this scenario, a student scoring 58 in PTE Academic will still need to retake another English proficiency test to fulfill the Malaysian government requirement, despite meeting the University’ s minimum requirement. You may check with the Admissions Office on the government requirement of your applied course to prepare for your English test.
MONASH ENGLISH Monash University Malaysia offers Monash English( ME) for students who do not meet the English entry requirements. Some Monash University courses do not accept ME.

The published scores are based on Monash University’ s English requirements and subject to change.
In addition to the University’ s English requirements, the Malaysian Government has set English requirements for each course. When you apply, you will be advised if you have met those requirements.
ME is not applicable for the Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Commerce and Master of Professional Counselling. The 10-week ME is not applicable for a pathway to the Master of Biotechnology.
