Alleviating traffic congestion
Traffic congestion costs Malaysia RM13 billion yearly in lost productivity , wasted fuel and environmental damage .
A multidisciplinary research team at Monash is looking into coordinating traffic signals to reduce up to 100 seconds in travel time for each driver , and developing an intelligent transportation ecosystem to ease traffic congestion and reduce carbon emissions .

Addressing inequalities in migration
We are part of a £ 20 million global research hub , funded by UK Research and Innovation , that is exploring how South-South migration is affecting inequality and development in less developed regions . Our efforts are targeted to impact policies to reduce income inequalities , close the gaps in education and health , and tackle prejudice , discrimination and exclusion experienced by migrants and their families . Monash anchors the Nepal-Malaysian Corridor , one of six Corridors of focus .
Empowering rural women
The lack of entrepreneurial skills training is a major obstacle for rural women seeking to lift themselves from poverty through entrepreneurship . Working with Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia , we developed a training program that benefited 500 women microentrepreneurs in the B40 household income group in its first year . The program was subsequently adopted by the Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember in Indonesia .
Communicating the climate crisis
The Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub Malaysia Node brings together our expertise in Arts and Social Sciences , Science and the team from Monash Australia to research climate communications in Southeast Asia . The goal is to advance global climate literacy so that governments , policymakers , businesses , and the public can make informed decisions in response to the evolving impacts of climate change .
