Geographical Information Systems MSc

Investigate all the essential areas of geospatial data analysis , including Geographical Information Systems ( GIS ), remote sensing and Earth observation , geodatabases , programming , and field techniques .
Apply practical GIS skills in a range of contexts and use geospatial data for real world solutions . Learn image processing and spatial analysis techniques , including programming for GIS and remote sensing applications . Use the same software tools employed by professionals in the field .
Get hands-on experience of using Geographical Information ( GI ) instruments and emerging technologies , including GPS , Total Stations and 3D laser scanners . Practise your GIS data collection skills , both in the field and in our GIS and remote sensing laboratory . Analyse spatial data through your own project work , and apply data analysis methods and software tools to help solve real-world problems . Apply the principles of research design , data collection and analysis on a GIS research project of your choice .

CONTACT TIME
You can expect to spend two days per week on campus - Tuesdays and Wednesdays ( Wednesdays in Year 1 , Tuesdays in Year 2 for part time students ). There are some additional days of field work during the Spring term ( two weeks / ten days maximum ).

Geological and Environmental Hazards MSc

Advance your career predicting and preparing for geological and environmental hazards .
Explore the physical processes that affect and control natural hazards , including volcanology and earthquakes , flooding and hydrological hazards , coastal erosion , slope instability and landslides . Investigate hazard identification , terrain evaluation , and risk assessment techniques . Learn how to manage – and mitigate – the impact of floods , earthquakes , landslides , volcanoes and coastal erosion .
Experiment in our geotechnics and rock mechanics labs to analyse and characterise geological materials . Use spatial analysis tools , simulation software and data analysis to assess the risks of natural hazards . Design and implement an advanced research project , and produce a detailed report . Become skilled in the application of specialist techniques including numerical hazard modelling and simulation , catastrophe modelling , field reconnaissance and geomorphological mapping , geotechnical testing , and remote sensing . Record and report field data related to volcanic activity , seismology and earthquake geology on a field trip to Sicily .
