Coastal and Marine Resource Management MSc

Investigate a range of challenges unique to marine and coastal environments , from the health of ocean ecosystems , to the conservation , preservation and sustainable development of coastlines .
Study new techniques for mapping and modelling environments , planning and allocating resources , and developing and growing coastal communities and economies .
Study in the historic naval and commercial port city of Portsmouth and experience the busy Solent waterway , the Jurassic coasts of Dorset and the Isle of Wight , and marine conservation zones in Hampshire and Sussex on field trips . You ’ ll also take part in a six-day residential course on Jersey in the Channel Islands .
Understand the challenges and opportunities of marine policy , planning and conservation , and the Blue Economy . Learn the key theories and principles of Geographic Information System ( GIS ) data mapping and analysis . Investigate how the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals can be incorporated in coastal and marine conservation and development .

Crisis and Disaster Management MSc

Develop your career in emergency planning , disaster management and response .
Learn new skills and disaster management techniques ; including Geographical Information Systems ( GIS ) and remote sensing for mapping ; social surveying methods ; approaches to risk analysis ; and the design of emergency management training exercises . Learn to be a confident professional , able to manage people and situations in the field anywhere in the world .
Take part in SIMEX – the UK ’ s largest annual international disaster response simulation exercise . Experience field training with emergency services , the military and NGOs . Hear from experts with organisations such as the Red Cross , NHS , Environment Agency , Armed Forces and Oil Spill Response . Carry out a voluntary work placement and complete a final project based on your experience .

Full time : three intensive days of ‘ block teaching ’ per month ( eight hours per day , Tuesday-Thursday ). Part time : three intensive teaching days per month over six months in year 1 , then a blend of three intensive teaching days twice a year and your own research supported by weekly online tutorials over 12 weeks in year 2 .
You ’ ll also be set assignments and undertake online learning and independent study . This intensive form of study can often be easier to fit around your work and other life commitments .
