BE A PART OF RESEARCH THAT CHANGES THE WORLD
Our researchers are devoted to tackling problems that impact society , human life and our planet .
REVEALING OUR PLACE IN THE UNIVERSE
Professor Claudia Maraston won the Royal Astronomical Society ’ s prestigious Eddington Medal . Her work on stellar population models helps make sense of faraway light emissions . Studying complex galaxies seemingly formed soon after the Big Bang , she calculates the sum of light under different assumptions . This helps build a picture of our Universe long ago , bringing us closer to understanding the hows and whys of life .
ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT
At critical incidents , decisions made by police and emergency services are only as good as the facts at their fingertips . So Professor Becky Milne , founder of our Centre of Forensic Interviewing , and colleagues created new guidelines for interviewing witnesses , victims and suspects . There are two key aspects – gathering facts , and recognising that the interview is also a therapeutic process .
77 per cent of our research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent in the Research Excellence Framework ( REF ) 2021 . Recognised for our wide-ranging impacts on society , health , culture and the environment , we ’ re a Top 3 modern university for Research Power .
Our creative , collaborative research culture is developing all the time . At Portsmouth , you ’ ll be inspired by people at the forefront of their disciplines .

PUTTING A STOP TO THE ILLEGAL IVORY TRADE
Dr Caroline Cox and her Ivory Project Team helped shape the UK ’ s Ivory Act 2018 , which closes a loophole in the sale of illegal ivory . Self-regulation and hazy definitions let traders bypass existing laws and sell new , illegal ivory falsely as ‘ antique ’. The Act allows sales of old ivory only within five strict categories of cultural , historical and artistic value ; closing down poachers ’ routes to market .
my research I have always tried to push borders and go against the mainstream . I like to do science this way ; it ’ s more fun , it ’ s more challenging . You can inspire a new generation . And you can inspire new science .
