Whether for day-to-day operations or strategic decision-making, there is an imperative to record, manage and use information. This course prepares you for careers in big data analytics, business intelligence, systems design, planning and management, as well as knowledge and information management. You’ll gain the expertise to design solutions to business information problems, and to offer strategic guidance to organisations that will enhance their management and governance. Course structure A. FOUNDATIONS FOR ADVANCED BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS (24 points) You’ll complete four advanced preparatory units: • Introduction to business information systems • Systems analysis and design • Programming foundations in Java • Introduction to databases. B. CORE MASTER’S STUDY (48 points) You’ll complete: • Project management (6 points) MASTER OF BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS 2 years (full-time) 4 years (part-time)* Classes are held on weekday evenings. February and July • Five units (30 points) from: – Information and knowledge management systems – IT for management decision-making – Enterprise systems – Enterprise architecture and management – Distributed databases and big data – User interface design and usability – Business process modelling, design and simulation – Business intelligence and data warehousing • Two elective units (12 points) from the list above or from any school across the University with approval from the course director. C. ADVANCED PRACTICE (24 points) You have the option of pursuing either an industry experience progam or a research project. • As a research pathway student, you’ll complete: – IT research methods – Masters thesis part 1 – Masters thesis part 2 – Masters thesis final. PRIOR QUALIFICATIONS This course caters to students from a variety of backgrounds. If you do not have previous training in IT, the course includes preparatory units that will give you the IT knowledge needed for the remainder of the course. However, if you already have a degree in IT, you may be able to accelerate your study with an exemption from these preparatory units. This means that you can graduate in 1.5 years on full-time study. • As an industry experience student, you’ll complete: – Professional practice – Industry experience studio project (12 points) – A Level 5 IT elective. This course brought out an interest in business intelligence and analytics that I didn’t know I had. There were also many opportunities for a well-balanced and engaging student life.
