“The diversity of the backgrounds of the staff and
students that I have had the privilege of interacting with
here has been an extremely enlightening and humbling
experience. I believe that we all have something valuable
that we can contribute towards any discussion, and that
Monash has provided us with an environment that is
conducive for that purpose.”
CYREN WONG ZHI HOONG
Doctor of Philosophy
(in the area of Ecological Anthropology)
Currently working as Country Coordinator for
Monash Malaysia's Global Immersion Guarantee Program
Cyren is interested in the confluence between biodiversity conservation and its
intersections with the beliefs of the Orang Asal community that surround their
interactions with nature. For his doctoral study, he worked closely with a Semai
community in Northern Malaysia that is involved in the conservation of the Rafflesia
cantleyi and the Rajah Brooke’s Birdwing. He hopes that his research will highlight
the importance of privileging indigenous knowledge and perspectives in the effort
to protect our rainforests and natural heritages.
