MASTER OF COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA STUDIES The world is facing unprecedented change in communications, media content, forms, technology, and policy over the last decade. These changes have wide ranging implications for business, politics, public administration, and everyday life. Learning outcomes This course addresses these changes and critically engages with the potential and challenges posed by the rise of digital media, globalisation, and cross-cultural exchange. You will examine past, present and future trends to further your understanding of communications and media systems both locally and globally. These include critical thinking, cultural sensitivity, advanced reading and communication skills (both written and verbal), and high-level analytical skills. More widely, the degree aims to develop skills in communications and media research. Course structure The course is made up of 72 credit points (six units) of study. These are divided into the following: PART A. CORE MASTER’S STUDY (48 points) Core units (24 points) > AMG5409 Communication research practices Capstone unit (12 points) > AMG5742 Communications research project* One discipline elective (12 points) > See below for options PART B. ADVANCED EXPERTISE (24 points) Option 1 – Research pathway AMG5743 Communications research thesis (24 points)* Option 2 – Discipline electives Two additional 12 point units from the following: > AMG5400 Global digital media: Issues in international and transnational communication > AMG5382 Contemporary issues in Asia > AMG5018 Celebrity, fashion, publicity > AMG5751 Communications industry internship *You can undertake AMG5743 after completion of 48 points in the course if you’ve achieved a minimum distinction average and with the approval of the coordinator. Undertaking this unit will fulfil the capstone and discipline elective requirement in the Core Master’s Study. Part-time classes are held on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings.
