We provide a truly multidisciplinary approach to research, to address clinical problems with an excellent integration of the skills and knowledge of engineers, mathematicians, biologists, physicists and clinicians. Our international quality in research is ranked as world leading and having an‘ outstanding’ impact in Cell Therapy.
Our students benefit from having access to state-of-the-art laboratory and clinical research facilities across our three research sites: the Guy Hilton Research Centre, Keele University campus and the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry.
We continue to invest in our ISTM facility, which has led to its rapid expansion, so we remain at the cutting edge of research. Our latest equipment, for translational research, includes cell therapy suites, genomic facilities, advanced laser and diagnostic laboratories.
We believe the focused interaction of scientist and clinician in a single unit is key to the success of the Institute, maximising and building on the strength of the individual researchers.
Our students gain a truly exceptional experience working within our research facilities, with exposure and support from some of the leading academics and our‘ bench to bedside’ approach fosters excellent working relationships with the national UK NHS, and worldwide medical and biotechnology industries.

Aiming to constantly improve and achieve The Institute attracts major research grant funding of £ 5million per year from UK Research Councils, European Union, National Institutes for Health USA, Department of Health, Royal Society, Innovate UK and many UK charities.
In the UK national Research Excellence Framework 2014, 90 % of the Institute’ s submitted research was rated as internationally significant or higher, including over 40 % ranked as world-leading.
We hold an international profile, in connection to our work at the cutting edge of stem cell therapies. We are a European Tissue Engineering Centre of Excellence.
Our Institute members have active collaborations with universities throughout the UK and over 35 countries in Europe, USA and the rest of the world.
