22 | ADDING VALUE
The Institute of Liberal Arts
and Sciences
As we move forward in our careers, much of what we learn, do and
experience spans across an array of subjects and disciplines. We
understand that everything is interconnected and decisions and
actions in one area will impact on others.
The Institute of Liberal Arts and
Sciences is a vibrant welcoming
hub. It brings together researchers
from across Health, Humanities
and Social Sciences and Natural
Sciences from within the University,
as well as our visiting fellows
and research collaborators from
across the world. It is a home
for interdisciplinary research
that drives innovation, makes a
difference to society and culture,
and enhances the academic and
cultural environment for all
postgraduates at Keele.
From the social and environmental
effects of climate change to the
impact of technology on humans
and their relationships, we face
challenges in the world today
that disrupt the ways we live in
our communities, endanger basic
human needs and influence life
chances and opportunities. The
choices we make, our priorities
and the ways we seek to deliver
them, will shape futures and we
can no longer look to any one
discipline or area of research to
provide solutions.
Based at Keele Hall, the Victorian
country house at the heart of
our beautiful green campus,
we offer a stimulating events
programme, including the
prestigious Grand Challenges
Lecture Series, with eminent
speakers on today's urgent
societal questions, plus a range
of spaces and places, research
workshops and seminars for
meeting and working with
postgraduates and academics
from across the disciplines.
Our annual interdisciplinary
postgraduate conference is an
opportunity for you to share your
work with people tackling diverse
questions in different fields. It
challenges you to engage them in
your research and to communicate
your ideas in ways that can be
understood and appreciated by
lay audiences.
The Institute is Keele at its
best and fulfils the University’s
founding ethos ‘the pursuit of
truth in the company of friends’.
It is a great place to make new
connections and to develop the
skills, perspectives and fresh
thinking needed for the problems
that face us in the world today.

“Most importantly the conference achieved its aim of
being a space for cross-disciplinary conversations to take
place. I would also like to say that despite our explicit
awareness of other PGRs at Keele, this space really
made me feel part of a wider community, a
community that is thriving.”
