Gran Canaria
With pine-covered mountains and undulating sand dunes, birdwatchers flock here for migratory and native birds, such as the canary and the elusive Gran Canaria blue chaffinch. Popular hiking routes are Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga.
Lanzarote
Volcanic Lanzarote is home to a charred landscape dotted with white buildings and snaked with black tar roads. Head to Timanfaya National Park to see how volcanic eruptions have shaped this land. Stop at vineyards en route— the island is famed for its white wines.
La Palma
In stark contrast to the other islands, La Palma is green and lush. Most visitors tend to come here for solace, fresh air and outdoor adventure. Taburiente Crater National Park has great hiking routes. The island is also superb for stargazing.
La Gomera
On the smaller La Gomera, Garajonay National Park offers popular hiking and cycling routes. The island is also home to one of the world’ s only whistling languages, Silbo Gomero, used by shepherds. Salto de pastor is their method of using a tall pole to traverse the steep lands. image: getty. Illustration: emma kelly
