Hood ’ s Bay and Staithes are worth a visit , as is the market town of Helmsley , packed with independent shops full of Yorkshire produce . The town of Whitby and its atmospheric clifftop abbey ruins — the inspiration for Bram Stoker ’ s Dracula — can be reached on the Coastliner bus from York .
West of York , the countryside is more rolling and elegant : it may come as no surprise to discover that parts of Downton Abbey were filmed here , near Fountain ’ s Abbey — don ’ t miss Studley Royal Water Gardens with its mirrored lakes and formal hedges framing the ancient abbey ruins .
The 17th-century stately home Castle Howard will be instantly recognizable to anyone who watched the 1981 British television adaption of Brideshead Revisited , or the 2008 movie of the same novel . The house itself is fabulously opulent , and the grounds include the 145-acre Yorkshire Arboretum , home to more than 6,000 rare trees .
