DAYS AT THE MUSEUM
As might be expected of a city with so much history , York is not short of museums . Some are whimsical — York ’ s Chocolate Story tells the story of the city ’ s chocolate-making families through an entertaining guided tour that involves plenty of tasting and even making . Equally immersive is the National Railway Museum , with plenty of real trains to explore , including an extensive collection of splendid royal carriages , and the Mallard — the world ’ s fastest steam locomotive .
Jorvik Viking Centre is built on the site of an extraordinary archeological discovery , which revealed the houses and workshops of Viking-era York . A ‘ ride ’ takes visitors on a journey through reconstructed Viking streets to experience the sights , sounds and even smells of 10th-century York . To get even more hands-on , visit sister attraction , Dig : An Archeological Adventure , with its recreated excavation pits filled with Roman , Viking , medieval and Victorian finds . For more recreated street scenes , visit York Castle Museum , which has a Victorian street , Kirkgate , complete with cobblestones , sweet shop , taxidermist
