COAST TO COAST

Kotor
WHERE : MONTENEGRO
Known to locals simply as ‘ the Boka ’, the Bay of Kotor is a dramatic landscape of narrow inlets backed by limestone bluffs that are reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord . It ’ s home to around 60 miles of sheltered coastline and dotted with handsome fortified towns , charming fishing settlements and secluded coves . Trace the twisted road from ritzy Tivat , an anchorage for superyachts , to peaceful Perast with its 17 baroque palaces . The bay ’ s leading lady , its namesake town of Kotor , is wedged in one of the prettiest coves , cut from the foothills of Mount Lovcen . Venetian-era fortifications — including three miles of restored defensive walls — give it a Game of Thrones-esque appeal . Kotor ’ s signature cobbled lanes open onto pretty squares , culminating with the frescoed St . Tryphon Cathedral . Beyond the bulwarks , quiet pebble beaches invite visitors to dip their toes in the Adriatic , while the Ladder of Kotor , a switchback-rich hiking trail , beckons the more intrepid to summit the hilltop Sveti Ivan Fortress for commanding views . image : awl images
