cruise colored houses and dancers entwined in the sensuous tango . Sports fans can tour La Bombonera stadium , testimony to Argentina ’ s other passion — soccer . If you have time , head to bohemian San Telmo , home to a flea market and street entertainers .
Buenos Aires is a city that never sleeps . It bodes well that Viking ’ s itinerary includes an overnight stay here , should you wish to further explore the place at night . There are many tango and dinner shows that provide an exciting introduction to the iconic dance — and you can even book a workshop to try learning it .
It goes without saying that Buenos Aires is one of the continent ’ s most thriving culinary capitals , home to world-class asado ( meat barbecued on a special grill ), ornate marble-floored cafes and a burgeoning craft beer scene . When it ’ s time for a break , grab a strong Argentinian coffee and croissant at the opulent , French-style Cafe Tortoni in Avenida de Mayo , which first opened its doors in 1858 . If you want to linger longer , pre- and post-cruise extensions are available .
USHUAIA
It ’ s no surprise that Argentina ’ s most southerly town , sandwiched between the snow-capped Martial Mountains and the Beagle Channel in the dramatic Tierra del Fuego archipelago , has been nicknamed ‘ fin del mundo ’, or ‘ end of the world ’. Ushuaia is the stepping-off point for voyages to Antarctica , and there ’ s a palpable air of excitement as you join other adventurers getting ready for the expedition . Make sure to stop and take a photo next to the fin del mundo sign by the cruise terminal .
Guests will start and finish their voyage here . It ’ s easy to walk around the relatively compact town with its grid-like layout , and there are some interesting museums dotted about to whet your appetite for the adventure ahead . Museo del Fin del Mundo is a highlight , dedicated to the birds and nature of the unique archipelago . This moniker was penned by 16th-century images : awl images ; alamy
