ESSENTIALS
------------
When to go: Charleston is a year-round destination with a humid subtropical climate. The best months to visit are March to May and September to November, when the weather is pleasant, the flowers are blooming and several major festivals are on. The best deals to be found are in December to February, during the surprisingly mild winter months. Currency: U. S. dollar Language: English Getting around: The city is extremely walkable, particularly in the Historic District. The free CARTA DASH Trolleys cover most of the main tourist spots, while rideshares like Uber and Lyft also operate widely. Water Taxis connect downtown with neighboring Mount Pleasant and other waterfront areas.
EVENING For your final dinner reservation in Charleston, look to combine the best elements of its rich culinary scene in one blockbuster venue. Lowland on George Street— perfectly positioned at the top of the Historic District— is a romantic Southern-style tavern with a roaring fire and an upstairs dining room recognized by the Michelin Guide. Serving hearty modern comfort food, the menu places particular emphasis on this stretch of the Atlantic seaboard( nicknamed the Lowcountry), with all its endemic ingredients and traditional recipes. The fried fish fritters and grilled grouper are both fan favorites, but people drive across state lines for Lowland’ s legendary crispy quail, too.
At the end of Gone with the Wind, Rhett Butler turns to face Scarlett O’ Hara and delivers the immortal line:“ Frankly, my dear, I don’ t give a damn. I’ m going back to Charleston, where there is still a little grace and civility left in the world.” The good news is that there’ s still plenty of both in this rich, charismatic, delicious city. And plenty more besides.
