For most of the year , Namaqualand is desolate . Deep cracks crisscross the dry and rain-deprived region , a semidesert scorched by the relentless sun . Until , that is , spring begins in late August . Bursting from the barren earth , bright orange daisies carpet the landscape . Awash with vivid colour for only a couple of months , the Namaqualand daisies attract tourists from to the rarely-visited region . Head to the west of South Africa , not too far from its Namibian border , to take one of the popular hiking routes that wind through the blooms . spring 2023 • 7
