This 186-mile circular route passes through historic communities and fishing villages throughout Nova Scotia and the rolling green hills are very similar to the mountains of Scotland and Ireland . Offering amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Breton Highlands , it can be driven in a day , but there ’ s so much to see along the way it could easily take up three or even five days . The midway point of Pleasant Bay is an excellent place for whale-watching , plus there are forests , lakes and tiny villages to enjoy . Signs along the way are in English but some are also in the Indigenous language of Mi ’ kmaq , French and also Scottish Gaelic around the central and eastern areas .
