Bordeaux and the Rhône River Valley have winemaking traditions dating back to the first century. The harvest season in Bordeaux begins in late August with white varieties like sauvignon blanc, continuing through October with merlot, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. In the Rhône River Valley, the season begins in August in the Southern Rhône and September in the Northern Rhône.
For a behind-the-scenes harvest experience, the Rhône River Valley’ s Domaine de Grangeneuve offers a seven-hour workshop that traces a day in the life of a winemaker from vineyard to barrel.
In Bordeaux, harvest time offers the chance to experience longstanding traditions. The Fête des Vendanges in Saint-Émilion features a torchlight procession by the Jurade de Saint-Émilion, a wine brotherhood with roots in medieval times. Visitors can delve into history first-hand with a stay at Château Pape Clément, which has been harvesting grapes since 1252.
