Veneto
WHERE : ITALY image : ALAMY . WORDS : ANGELA LOCATELLI
Located in northeast Italy , Veneto is perhaps most famous for its coastal strip — home to Venice , its capital city . But head inland and you ’ ll find a region of green slopes and twisting vines . This is the country ’ s wine-producing powerhouse , best known for prosecco : the sparkling white is bottled in and around villages like Santo Stefano ( pictured left ), on the ‘ hogback ’ hills of Valdobbiadene and Conegliano — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019 . Yet , with a terroir that stretches from the Dolomites to the Adriatic Sea , Veneto is very much a catchall enodestination , home to denominations that range from dry , zesty Soave whites to velvety , fruited Valpolicella reds and many more besides .
Come in early autumn , when the harvest ’ s in full swing and cellars open their doors for tours and tastings . Wine enthusiasts have 10 dedicated wine routes to choose from , too , which link Veneto ’ s vineyards with other culinary and cultural highlights .
