Dating back to 1434 , the Striezelmarkt is said to be Germany ’ s oldest Christmas market . Between the usual mugs of mulled wine , bags of roasted almonds and sausageladen grills , there are local specialities . These include Pflaumentoffel , chimney-sweeplike figures made from prunes , and Dresdner Christstollen , a famous festive bake made with raisins , candied peel and almonds . Other markets fill squares and streets around the city , selling pottery , lace and glass art from the region .

In Salzburg , you ’ ll be drawn into the market by the sound of music . There are regular concerts , singalong choirs , brass instruments played in terraces and towers . They accompany the traditional Salzburg Advent Singing performances in the Grosses Festspielhaus Festival Hall .
