Noticing what I considered to be this ridiculous lamenting over a piece of machinery, I recognized how attached I am to the comforts of my life. My house, my car, my clothing, my relationships, and my daily routine all give me a sense of who I am.
It is easy to see why people find it so difficult to rebound from the big changes in life, such as the loss of a job or a house, the death of a loved one, or the end of a relationship.
These things are what give us a sense of who we are in the world. Without these things, we are left wondering who we are and what our purpose is in the world.
The resistance to change is a very human condition. In prehistoric times our survival depended on being in familiar surroundings, lest we get eaten alive. In modern times, we still relate to change as a threat to our survival. After all, if the world around us changes will we still recognize it, and will we recognize ourselves in it?
