of wood in architecture and decoration, all depends on the project in general and the space proposal.
Learn about some advantages of using wood as a building material and decoration:
- Natural product: the common wood is non-toxic, it doesn’t release odors or chemical vapors, being safe to touch and handle. Unlike other raw materials, when it is old or when it no longer fulfills its structural function, poses no danger to the environment, since it is easily reconverted;
- Renewable: as long as new trees are planted conscientiously and without compromising natural resources and replenishing them, wood will continue to be available;
- Carbon stores: trees capture carbon from the atmosphere and release oxygen;
- Excellent insulator: it presents good natural conditions of thermal insulation and acoustic absorption;
Easy to work: this is a very versatile raw material;
- Durability: this raw material can last for thousands of years in perfect conditions;
- Safety: the wood does not oxidize and it is very resistant;
- Versatility of use: it can be produced in pieces with different dimensions;
- Reusable: ability to be reused multiple times;
- Physical-mechanical properties: it was the first material used, able to withstand both compression and tensile stresses. It has a low volumetric mass and high mechanical resistance. It may have the same compressive strength as a reasonable strength concrete. The flexural strength can be about ten times higher than that of the concrete, as well as the shear strength. It does not break down when subjected to sudden shocks that may cause damage to other building materials;
- Texture: in its natural aspect presents wide variety of patterns.
However, in spite of being in lower number, the wood can present some disadvantages that must be taken into account:
- Variability: the wood is very sensitive to the environment, increasing or decreasing of dimensions with the variations of humidity;
- Vulnerability: is very vulnerable to external agents and their durability is limited, when no preventive measures are taken;
- Combustible
- Dimensions: are limited.
