We were in the 90's when the national lighting sector began to feel the first challenges due to the constant changes in the market with the intensification of globalization, the increase in bureaucratic demand, verifying the need to have an Entity representing all companies.

It was this great assumption that motivated a group of 21 companies in the sector to meet in Leiria, on the 24th of February 1997, where the creation of the AIPI was decided. They argued that only the strength of Associativism would be able to fully respond to such challenges.

On March 20, the Association's Statutes were approved and an Installing Committee was appointed, composed of Dra. Ilda Pires, Mr. Josá Maria Ferreira and Mr. Fernando Guilherme Carpinteiro, being responsible for carrying out the tasks defined in article 31 of the Statutes where the competences of the I.C.

AIPI soon defined the internacionali- zation of Portuguese companies in the sector as one of the main guidelines of its activity, since this is one of the most urgent needs of the sector due to the dependence of the vast majority of companies on the national market. The materialization of these actions was only possible thanks to the partnership established with AICEP and COMPETE through their joint internationalization projects.

FIAM, in Valencia (Spain), in 1997, was the first international lighting fair where our companies participated, followed by the Hannover Messe fair (Germany), the largest industrial technology fair in the world.

After this milestone, there were many markets, through international fairs and Business Missions, where our Members were present:
