And in our version of the timeless chasing game, this is great news. We start by complimenting a member of the Portland performing arts community who, in turn, must
write kind things about another community member. On and on it shall go throughout
the 2014-15 performance season, to ensure that plenty of positivity is generated. And
there’s only one rule: if you've been tagged, we can't tell you who's responsible. You’ll
find out for the first time right here in print.

NANCY DAVIS & JIM LANE
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL WITH
THE OREGON SYMPHONY
FOUNDERS AND DIRECTORS
OF THE PORTLAND BALLET
Marilyn De Oliveira is an intense, versatile
cellist who came to Portland from Brazil,
via Miami and San Antonio. She is assistant
principal with the Oregon Symphony and
a regular performer with Third Angle
New Music and Mousai Remix. Always
engaged, her performances full of joy and
passion, she is a pleasure to watch — not
to mention, she's always dressed in stylish,
cutting-edge attire.
Nancy Davis and Jim Lane have been partners onstage, in life and in transforming the
Portland dance community. Founders and
directors of The Portland Ballet, this talented
and tireless couple has established in Hillsdale
one of the premier ballet programs in the
region, if not the country. Bringing stellar
artistic credentials, a passion for education
and the knowledge of how to build and
maintain a model organization, Nancy and
Jim have attracted an outstanding faculty and
created a school of ballet that achieves a rare
combination: professional caliber training in
a truly nurturing environment. The recently
completed expansion of their beautiful studio
facility is an encouraging sign that Nancy and
Jim will be shaping the lives of young dancers
in our community for many years to come.

CO-FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
OF BRAVO YOUTH ORCHESTRAS
Seth Truby is a doer. Passionate about how
music can effect social change, he is Cofounder and Executive Director of BRAVO
Youth Orchestras, a nonprofit organization
that transforms the lives of underserved
youth through intensive classical music
instruction. Originally from North Carolina, Seth received a Bachelor of Arts from
Oberlin College and previously worked
with Chamber Music Northwest as their
development and community engagement
director. When he became acquainted with
the Venezuelan El-Sistema program and its
power to impact society, the dream to bring
this kind of musical gift to PDX lit him
up! With his big smile, relentless drive and
sincere philanthropy, he’s now making the
Portland community a better one — one
child at a time.

JIM LANE KEN SELDEN
PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY’S
DIRECTOR OF ORCHESTRAL STUDIES
Like so many young artists that make their
homes in Portland, Ken Selden’s artistic
journey has stretched from coast to coast and
across the globe. Since 2006 Ken has served
as Portland State University’s director of
orchestral studies. During his brief tenure, the
Orchestral program has blossomed artistically
— thereby attracting more and more promising students. His adventurous programing has
won the Portland State University Symphony
three awards from ASCAP and the League of
American Orchestras. Ken’s passion for passing his love of music to his students is clear
when watching him rehearse a particularly
intricate passage. His mix of firm direction
sprinkled lightly with encouraging humor tells
the story of his dedication to the art he loves
so dearly. Portlanders are blessed with myriad
wonderful reasons to put up with a few rainy
months each year, and transplant artists/educators like Ken, rank at the top . .
