Left , “ Kodiak ” Is A Veteran Of Kiska , Tarawa And Saipan : The handsome guy on the right is " Kodiak ," velvety mascot aboard a Coast Guard-manned invasion transport helping to play hob with the Japs in the Pacific . " Kodiak " is the favorite of the ship ' s company and a cool , hardened veteran of the attacks upon Kiska in the Aleutians , Tarawa in the Gilberts and Saipan in the Marianas . He wears the white hat occasionally , but doesn ' t actually peer through the binoculars . They hang around his neck just for the picture . His shipmate is another three major invasion veteran , Coast Guardsman Arnold S . Wechter , Yeoman Third Class , of San Francisco , Calif .
