CAPTURING THE STUNNING BEAUTY OF FLORIDA ’ S COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS THROUGH DOUBLE EXPOSURE PHOTOGRAPHY .

The history of double exposure photography can be traced back to the 1860s when individuals believed that spirits could be caught on camera . Referred to as “ spirit photography ,” ghostly images were created by making two exposures on the same negative plate .
I began shooting double exposures using film cameras in the 1980s and continue to do them today . The difficulty with film cameras is that its a hit-or-miss process because you cannot preview the second exposure . Digital cameras allow you to preview the second exposure and that makes all the difference . Just like film , the images are exposed “ in camera ” on the sensor without the use of Photoshop .
In my opinion , this technique bridges the gap between a photograph recording a single moment in time , and photography as a work of art . In our local landscapes , these images capture the nuance of motion , color and movement that I see happening all the time , the spirit and essence of nature , I think .
Tom Schifanella , a former creative director turned photographer , creates compelling visual stories through his photography . He focuses on capturing the essence of fleeting moments , often inspired by nature , travels , and introspective themes .
His approach to photography is deeply influenced by storytelling , allowing him to convey complex narratives and emotions through his images . Tom ’ s work has been exhibited internationally and published by National Geographic , CNN , Southern Living and The Washington Post .
