Thinking that he had accomplished all that he wanted in golf , he retired from competitive golf and focused on his business interests , but he founded Augusta National Golf Club in 1933 and inaugurated the Masters Tournament in 1934 . Later , in 1971 , he wrote a letter to the USGA requesting that the organization consider awarding the US Open to Atlanta Athletic Club , which it did for 1976 , a championship won by Jerry Pate .
Jones is not the only accomplished member of the AAC . Charlie Yates won the British Amateur in 1938 . Alexa Stirling , a few years older than Jones , was one of the best female golfers of her era , and member Martha Kirouac won the US Women ’ s Open in 1970 , and participated on the Curtis
Cup team in 1970 and ‘ 72 . In 2004 , Kirouac served as captain for the U . S . Curtis Cup team that was successful in its defense of the cup in the biennial match played at Formby Golf Club , Merseyside , England .
Recently the AAC completed the renovation of its Riverside Course , which hosted the US Women ’ s Open in 1990 , won by Betsy King . Golf
